A Thousand Miles down the Yangtze

Day 1
London - Chengdu

Depart London Heathrow on the non-stop British Airways flight to Chengdu at around 1735.

Day 2
Chengdu 2 nights

Morning arrival and transfer to the M Hotel Chengdu for 2 nights. Afternoon visit to the People’s Park to join in one of Chengdu’s favourite pastimes, drinking tea. Visit Jinli old quarter and take dinner in a local restaurant. (D)

Day 3
Chengdu

Morning visit to the renowned Panda Research Centre and enjoy lunch at a typical Sichuan Restaurant. Late afternoon visit to the lovely Shu Brocade Institute. Optional evening Sichuan opera performance after a dinner of typical Sichuan cuisine. (BLD)

Day 4
Chengdu - Chongqing 1 night

Morning at leisure. Take the train to Chongqing and visit the Three Gorges Dam Museum overlooking People’s Square. Continue to the Chongqing Hilton Hotel for overnight. (B)

Day 5
Yangtze Cruise 6 nights

Board your river vessel, the superb Victoria Sophia for the 6-night cruise to Shanghai. Afternoon shore excursion to Fengdu, visiting either the "Ghost City" on Mingshan Hill, or the new relocation village for families who have moved as a result of the Yangtze's rising waters brought about by the Three Gorges Dam. Day 6
Yangtze Cruise

Start sailing through the three gorges, Qutang Gorge is the shortest (5 miles), narrowest (500 feet), and most dramatic. The 25-mile long Wu Gorge is known for its quiet beauty and forest-covered mountains. Enjoy a relaxing excursion through the attractive gorges of the Goddess Stream. (Depending on river conditions, an alternate excursion may be substituted to the Daning River or Shennong Stream, which have their own attractive gorges.) In the evening, sail through the Three Gorges Dam ship locks. Additional Shore Excursion to White Emperor City (river conditions permitting), an ancient city overlooking the western end of Qutang Gorge. (BLD)

Yangtze Cruise

Morning visit to Three Gorges Dam site. (BLD)

Day 8
Yangtze Cruise

Afternoon shore excursion of Wuhan, visiting the Hubei Provincial Museum. (BLD)

Day 9
Yangtze Cruise

Full day excursion to Jiuhuashan or “Mountain of the Nine Lotuses”, one of the four sacred mountains in Chinese Buddhism. The one hundred square kilometer area is known for its quiet beauty, which includes ridges and peaks, winding paths, waterfalls, streams and ancient temples. (Huangshan or “Yellow Mountain” may be substituted if weather or road conditions do not permit a visit to Jiuhuashan.) (BLD)

Day 10
Yangtze Cruise

Full day tour of Nanjing including Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum and a Qing Dynasty-style Bazaar surrounding a Confucian Temple. (BLD)

Day 11
Yangtze Cruise - Shanghai 2 nights

Arrive Shanghai this morning and disembark. Visit the intriguing Jade Buddha Temple and the fantastic Shanghai Museum. Transfer to the Central Hotel for 2 nights. Afternoon visit to the Yuyuan Garden. These gardens occupy some five acres within which they contain the quintessential elements of a Chinese garden - pavilions, rockeries, pools, moon gates, latticed windows and small cloisters. Evening optional cruise on the Huangpu River to admire the illuminated Bund. (BLD)

Day 12
Shanghai

This morning drive to the picturesque canal town of Zhujiajiao. Take a lunch of local specialities before exploring its waterways and lively streets where colourful shops, tea houses and eateries abound. Return to Shanghai and the rest of the afternoon at leisure. (BL)

Day 13
Shanghai - London

Transfer to the airport for the British Airways flight to London at 1100 arriving later the same day. (B)

Large fleet and expert crew
Victoria Cruises own and operate one of the Yangtze’s largest five-star fleet which are regularly refurbished and upgraded.  There are seven ships, the Victoria Anna, Grace, Jenna, Katarina, Lianna, Selina and Sophia, each managed by an experienced western cruise director supported by a team of knowledgeable river guides and a well-trained, multi-lingual crew. Guests may attend lectures on the Yangtze, Chinese history, culture and traditional medicine. Calligraphy, painting and Tai Chi lessons are also available.

Cuisine
Each Victoria cruise ship features a Dynasty Dining Room where buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner are served whilst the captain’s farewell dinner will be a grander sit down banquet.  All vessels also boast an A La Carte Restaurant and both Western and Chinese cuisine is served on board. Superior cabin guests can book the A La Carte Restaurant at a supplement of USD 45 per meal, and enjoy exquisite dining in an intimate setting.

Facilities on board
The signature style of all Victoria’s ships is one of luxury and elegance with Asian accents. Tastefully-appointed cabins, striking atriums and immaculate public rooms and polished woods create a delightful ambience. The open sun deck has 360-degree views and cabins have wide panoramic windows. Surprisingly, all cabins also have a bathtub as well as shower unit, so you can enjoy a good soak after some exciting sightseeing. There is also a beauty salon, clinic, fitness room, mini-spa, reading room, gift shop and a spacious lounge for lectures and performances, as well as full air conditioning, internet access and BBC channels.
