Explore China from a uniquely different angle on this innovative tour which offers a fascinating insight into China’s communist past. Beginning in Beijing, we visit Mao’s Mausoleum and tour other sites with connections to Chairman Mao and the Communist Party. Continuing to Nanchang we explore the city where the People’s Liberation Army was born and in Shaoshan we investigate the birthplace of Chairman Mao. Visit the must-see Terracotta Warriors in Xian and discover the city of Yan’an, Mao’s revolutionary base for many years.

Depart London Heathrow at around 2025 on the non-stop Air China flight to Beijing.
Arrive Beijing around 1310 and transfer to the historic Jade Garden Hotel, famous for its connections to the Chinese Communist party. Evening visit to the quaint hutong quarter by Lake Houhai. Enjoy a welcome dinner at The East is Red restaurant. This restaurant is known for its over-the-top Maoist dining environment - red flags, slogans and large pictures of Mao. (D)
Enjoy a tour of some of Beijing’s most famous sites including Chairman Mao’s Mausoleum, the Forbidden City, The National Museum of China, and the Temple of Heaven. (BL)

Take the train from Nanchang to the city of Changsha, the capital of Hunan province. Drive onwards to Shaoshan, the birthplace of Chairman Mao. Take an early flight from Changsha to the ancient Tang capital of Xian. Upon arrival transfer to the Forest City Hotel for a 2 night stay. In the afternoon visit the world renowned Terracotta Army, individually crafted life sized figures, complete with chariots and horses. (BD)

Fly to Yan’an, the holy land of China’s Communist Party revolution. It was Mao Zedong’s revolutionary base area when the Red Army arrived there at the end of 1935 after the gruelling Long March from Jiangxi. Many of the historical sites there are located in caves hollowed out from the local loess plateau. Afternoon visit to the Fenghuang Mountain - the site of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Baota Hill, and Yangjia Ling Revolutionary Site. (BLD)
Morning visit to the impressive Hukou waterfall on the famous Yellow River. Returning to Yan’an visit the Wangjiaping Revolutionary Museum, the site of the Central Military Commission and head office of the Eighth Route Army during its Yan’an occupation, which lasted from 19th October 1935 to 23rd March 1948. Take part in or observe some of the daily re-enactments of the red army’s battles in the area. (BLD)
Fly back to Beijing and transfer to the Jingshan Garden Hotel for a final 2-night stay in China. Enjoy the afternoon free to rest or explore some of the surrounding Hutong area before having the opportunity to see one of China’s great revolutionary musicals at the Chinese National Theatre. (B)
Drive north to the less crowded and more scenic part of the Great Wall at Mutianyu. Located in Huairou County, 70km northeast from Beijing, Mutianyu is one of the best preserved parts of the Great Wall. It used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and imperial tombs. (B)
Fly to London Heathrow with Air China arriving at round 1745 the same day. (B)
