This 2500-mile-long railway is the highest in the world, reaching 16,640ft above sea level at the Tangula Pass, and crosses the breathtaking landscapes of the Tibetan plateau where herds of yaks, gazelles and wild donkeys graze beneath the snow-capped Himalayas in one of the remotest corners on earth.

Day 1
London - Beijing

Depart London Heathrow at 1635 aboard British Airways flight to Beijing.

Day 2
Beijing 2 nights

Arrive Beijing and transfer to the Shangri-La Traders Hotel. Afternoon visit to the quaint hutong area near Lake Houhai and enjoy a rickshaw ride. Evening welcome dinner. (D)

Day 3
Beijing

Morning visit to the magnificent great Wall at Badaling. In the afternoon visit Tiananmen Square then continue to the Forbidden City, the complex of Imperial Palaces that were home to the emperors for over 500 years. (B)

Day 4
Beijing - Xining 1 night

Visit the Summer Palace. Stop by the Olympic sites, the Birds Nest and Water Cube before an early evening flight to Xining, capital of Qinghai Province, and the San Wang Hotel Xining. (BD)

Day 5
Xining - Train 1 night

Visit the imposing Dongguan Mosque. Afternoon transfer to the railway station for the pioneering train journey across the Roof of the World to Lhasa. This high-tech train reaches Tibet’s capital in just under 24 hours, and accommodation on board is sharing ‘soft sleeper’ 4-berth compartments. (Please note twin and single compartments are subject to availability and extra cost, and no meals are included on board). (BD)

Day 6
Lhasa 4 nights

Traverse magnificent landscapes of mountain peaks, desert, ice rivers and glaciers. Arrive Lhasa this evening and transfer to the Brahmaputra Hotel. (D)

Day 7
Lhasa

Visit the Sera Monastery which is the second biggest Gelupa Monastery in the north suburb of Lhasa, built in 1419. At the heart of the oldest section of the city visit Jokhang Temple, built in the 7th century by the 33rd King. Wander through Barkhor Street, the middle pilgrimage circuit around Jokhang Temple. Lhasa

Today enjoy Potala Palace, the winter palace of the Dalai Lama, originally built in the 7th century by King Sotsen Gampo and rebuilt in the 17th century. Visit Norbulingka Museum, formerly the Dalai Lama’s Summer Palace, covering a huge area with palaces, pavilions and a zoo. (BLD)

Day 9
Lhasa

Depart for the biggest Gelupa monastery in the west suburb of Lhasa, Drepung, built in 1416. Afternoon free. (BLD)

Day 10
Shigatse 2 nights

Scenic drive across the plateau to Shigatse and the Tashi Choton Hotel. (BLD)

Day 11
Shigatse

Tour the Tashihunpo monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama, the Dalai Lama’s second-in-command. See the 86ft-high Maitreya Buddha statue, made from 600lbs of gold. (BLD)

Day 12
Shigatse - New Tinggri 2 nights

Drive towards New Tinggri over the Tsuo La and Lhakpa La passes, and see the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas ahead as the road descends. Stay at the modest Zhufeng Hotel. (BLD)

Day 13
Mount Everest

An excursion to Mount Everest, at 29,035ft the world’s highest mountain, and known in Tibet as ‘the mother goddess of the universe’. Visit the Base Camp, then return to New Tinggri. (BLD)

Day 14
Zhangmu - Gathi 1 night

Drive to the border of Tibet and Nepal, through the deep valley of the Bhote Kosi where waterfalls can be seen along the roadside. Head for the bustling mountainside town of Zhangmu and cross the Friendship Bridge into Nepal and stay overnight at the Borderland Resort. (BLD)

Day 15
Kathmandu 1 night

Drive to Kathmandu for an overnight stay at the 5-star Radisson or Yak & Yeti Hotel. (BLD)

Day 16
Kathmandu - London (Saturday)

Transfer to the airport for the return flight to London Heathrow via Delhi with British Airways, arriving at 0640 the following day. (B)
