Visit the Sera Monastery which is the second biggest Gelupa Monastery in the north suburb of Lhasa, built in 1419. At the heart of the oldest section of the city visit Jokhang Temple, built in the 7th century by the 33rd King. Wander through Barkhor Street, the middle pilgrimage circuit around Jokhang Temple. Today enjoy Potala Palace, the winter palace of the Dalai Lama, originally built in the 7th century by King Sotsen Gampo and rebuilt in the 17th century. Visit Norbulingka Museum, formerly the Dalai Lama’s Summer Palace, covering a huge area with palaces, pavilions and a zoo. (BLD)
Depart for the biggest Gelupa monastery in the west suburb of Lhasa, Drepung, built in 1416. Afternoon free. (BLD)
Scenic drive across the plateau to Shigatse and the Tashi Choton Hotel. (BLD)
Tour the Tashihunpo monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama, the Dalai Lama’s second-in-command. See the 86ft-high Maitreya Buddha statue, made from 600lbs of gold. (BLD)
Drive towards New Tinggri over the Tsuo La and Lhakpa La passes, and see the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas ahead as the road descends. Stay at the modest Zhufeng Hotel. (BLD)
An excursion to Mount Everest, at 29,035ft the world’s highest mountain, and known in Tibet as ‘the mother goddess of the universe’. Visit the Base Camp, then return to New Tinggri. (BLD)
Drive to the border of Tibet and Nepal, through the deep valley of the Bhote Kosi where waterfalls can be seen along the roadside. Head for the bustling mountainside town of Zhangmu and cross the Friendship Bridge into Nepal and stay overnight at the Borderland Resort. (BLD)
Drive to Kathmandu for an overnight stay at the 5-star Radisson or Yak & Yeti Hotel. (BLD)
Transfer to the airport for the return flight to London Heathrow via Delhi with British Airways, arriving at 0640 the following day. (B)
